I know what you’re thinking—We should book a family photoshoot soon… but life is BUSY. Between work, school drop-offs, after school activities and just keeping the house in one piece, it’s easy to push it off.
But here’s the thing: later often turns into next year, and before you know it, the kids aren’t so little anymore. Your once-chubby toddler is suddenly a lanky pre-teen, and your teenager? Well, they’re rolling their eyes at the idea of family photos.
And I get it. But here’s what I’ve seen time and time again: Years down the track, those same teenagers—the ones who groaned about being in the photos—end up treasuring them. Because these aren’t just photos; they’re reminders of home, of childhood, of a time that goes by way too fast.
As a Perth family photographer, I hear this all the time. “We’re too busy,” “I just need to lose a few kilos first,” “The kids aren’t in the mood.” But if I can give you one piece of advice?
Don’t wait for the “perfect time” because it doesn’t exist. Life will always be busy, the kids will always grow, and if you’re waiting for everything to be just right, you might miss the chance altogether.
But let’s break it down so you can find the best season for your family.
Spring (September – November) 🌿
This is hands down my busiest season for family photos in Perth. Why?
✅ Wildflowers, soft golden sunsets, and gorgeous weather.
✅ Not too hot, not too cold—perfect for everyone who doesn’t love extreme temps.
✅ Shorter days mean we can shoot earlier without disrupting bedtime routines.
☀️ Best for: Families who love a fresh, airy look with lots of colour and greenery.

Summer (December – February) ☀️
I won’t lie—summer in Perth can be HOT. It’s also windy, which isn’t great for beach sessions. If you’re set on a summer shoot, I recommend:
✅ Early morning sessions before the heat kicks in.
✅ Shaded locations instead of open spaces. (Snakes 🐍 no thank you)
✅ Late sunsets—this can be great for older kids but tricky for little ones’ bedtime.
🏖 Best for: Families who don’t mind the heat and love a vibrant, sunny feel.

Autumn (March – May) 🍂
Autumn is seriously underrated for family photos—and it’s actually the BEST time for beach sessions!
✅ Less wind than summer = no wild hair or flying sand.
✅ Earlier sunsets means no keeping little ones up too late.
✅ Beautiful golden light and rich, earthy tones.
✅ The red and brown leaves in the orchards are also magnificent—perfect for those dreamy, autumn-coloured backdrops.
🍁 Best for: Families who love a warm, golden glow, gorgeous autumn leaves, or a beach shoot without battling strong winds and late nights.

Winter (June – August) ❄️
Winter gets a bad rap, but hear me out—overcast days = the dreamiest soft light.
✅ No squinting into harsh summer sun.
✅ Crisp, cozy vibes (imagine snuggly blankets and warm cuddles).
✅ Parks are lush and green with wildflowers in bloom as well, making for stunning backdrops.
🔥 Best for: Families who love an intimate feel (or want to avoid peak season).

Still Not Sure? Here’s My Advice
Think about what feels most like your family. Are you a beachy vibe crew? Or do you love the look of golden autumn afternoons?
No matter when you book, I promise you this: You’ll never regret having these photos, but you might regret waiting.
