After photographing families across Perth for almost 20 years, I’ve discovered that there isn’t one perfect location for a family photography session. There is only the perfect location for your family.
Every family is different. Some need easy access for grandparents. Others want somewhere their children can run and play. Some can’t imagine family photos without the dog, while others dream of a quiet beach or a beautiful bush setting.
The location you choose has a huge impact on the feel of your family photos. It isn’t about choosing the most popular spot. It’s about choosing somewhere that suits your family, your children and the memories you want to create.
To help make the decision a little easier, I’ve put together my favourite family photography locations in Perth, from beautiful beaches and hidden bushland to peaceful Perth Hills orchards and riverside locations. Whether you’re looking for somewhere perfect for toddlers, grandparents, maternity photos or even your dog, you’ll find plenty of inspiration here.

Kings Park
Perfect for: Families with toddlers, older children, extended families, maternity sessions, dogs and grandparents.
Best time of year: All year.
Parking & Accessibility: Plenty of parking right at the location, accessible toilets, flat walking paths, pram friendly and ideal for grandparents or anyone with limited mobility.
What to wear: Soft neutrals like cream, sage, dusty blue and beige with natural fabrics such as linen or cotton photograph beautifully amongst the trees and open parkland.
My tip
This is one of my favourite spots for family photography in Perth because of the variety you get in one location. You’ll find beautiful bushland, open grassed areas and glimpses of the Perth city skyline, so every session feels a little different. It’s also one of the easiest locations for extended family sessions, grandparents or anyone who needs flat walking paths, seating and easy access. Kings Park is also one of my favourite locations for maternity photography in Perth
Hovea Falls
Best for: Families with young children, older children and maternity sessions.
Best time of year: Winter, Spring and Autumn.
Parking & Accessibility: Parking is available with toilets at the car park, however there is a walk to reach the best locations. Not suitable for prams, wheelchairs or grandparents with limited mobility.
What to wear: Earthy tones such as olive, cream, rust and warm browns blend beautifully with the bushland, rocks and waterfalls.
My tip: If your family loves the outdoors, this is one of my favourite locations for family photography in Perth. The terrain varies from rocks to cute bush pathways and natural waterfalls, and in spring it comes alive with wildflowers. Kids love this location because they can climb the safe rocks and the open space lets them feel free and more natural. If we’re lucky, we might even spot a few kangaroos while we’re there.
Lesmurdie Falls
Best for: Families with older children, maternity sessions and dogs.
Best time of year: All seasons.
Parking & Accessibility: Parking and toilets are available nearby, with a walk required to reach the lookout and bush tracks. Best suited to families comfortable walking on uneven ground and not recommended for prams or grandparents with limited mobility.
What to wear: Choose soft natural colours like cream, sage and warm neutrals with flowing fabrics that catch the beautiful sunset light.
My tip: This is one of my favourite sunset locations for family photography in Perth. It has the most glorious sunset that almost looks like there’s a sheer drop behind you (there isn’t!). If you love those big open sunset photographs, this location is hard to beat. If your family loves the outdoors, you’ll love the mix of rocks, bush pathways and wildflowers in spring. It’s not ideal for toddlers or grandparents because of the uneven ground.
Jarrahdale Forest
Best for: Families with young children, older children, extended families, maternity sessions, dogs and grandparents.
Best time of year: Autumn, Winter and Spring.
Parking & Accessibility: Parking and toilets are located near the entrance, with relatively flat walking paths making this one of the more accessible bush locations for families, grandparents and young children.
What to wear: Creams, oatmeal, sage green and soft browns work perfectly amongst the lush forest and create a timeless, natural feel.
My tip: I absolutely adore this location for family photography in Perth because it looks like nothing else in Perth. Every time I shoot here I never want to stop because there’s so much variety. Kids love the fallen tree they can climb, there’s a little river, beautiful flat pathways and it’s so peaceful you can hear the birds singing. It’s a little further to drive, but it’s worth every minute.
Coogee Beach
Best for: Families with young children, older children, extended families, maternity sessions and grandparents.
Best time of year: All year. Summer can be windy, particularly in the afternoons.
Parking & Accessibility: Parking and toilets are available nearby, with a short walk across the sand to reach the best photography spots. Suitable for active grandparents but not ideal for prams or wheelchairs.
What to wear: Light coastal colours like white, cream, sand and soft blue paired with breathable linen fabrics create a relaxed beach look.
My tip: This is my go-to beach for family photography in Perth. There’s a cute little bush area with bunny tail grasses that hardly anyone uses, beautiful sunlight streaming through the trees and gorgeous colours through the dunes. It’s usually much quieter than Cottesloe and is a great option if grandparents are happy walking on the sand.
City Beach / Floreat Dog Beach
Best for: Families with young children, older children, maternity sessions and dogs.
Best time of year: All year. Summer can be windy, particularly in the afternoons.
Parking & Accessibility: Parking is available nearby, although I provide a map showing the easiest place to park. There are no toilets and a walk through soft sand is required, making it unsuitable for prams or grandparents with limited mobility.
What to wear: Soft neutral colours with subtle texture photograph beautifully against the dunes and beach grasses while keeping the focus on your family.
My tip: I love this location for family photography in Perth because it feels like a locals’ beach. The huge sand dunes create such a different look and the long beach access pathway is perfect for photos before we even get to the sand. Plus, your furry family members are welcome too.
Mullaloo Beach
Best for: Families with young children, older children and maternity sessions.
Best time of year: All year. Summer can be windy, particularly in the afternoons.
Parking & Accessibility: Parking and toilets are available close by, however there is a walk across soft sand to reach the cliffs and dunes. Best suited to families comfortable walking on the beach.
What to wear: Cream, stone, soft blue and muted greens complement the white sand, limestone cliffs and ocean without competing for attention.
My tip: I love this location for family photography in Perth because it’s so much more than just a beach. The limestone rock formations, caves, huge sand dunes and long stretches of white sand give us so many different backdrops in one session. It’s such a fun place to photograph families.
Brigadoon
Best for: Families with older children, maternity sessions and dogs.
Best time of year: All year.
Parking & Accessibility: Roadside parking is available, with a short but slightly steep walk to the lookout. Not suitable for prams, wheelchairs or toddlers who love to explore near steep edges.
What to wear: Flowing dresses in cream, beige or soft earthy tones photograph beautifully against the rolling hills and golden sunsets.
My tip: If you’re after incredible sunset family photography in Perth, this is one of those locations people fall in love with. The views are spectacular and it’s one of my favourite places for maternity sessions. Bring a pair of comfy shoes because there’s a short walk to reach the best spot.
Roleystone Orchards
Best for: Families with young children, older children, extended families, maternity sessions, dogs and grandparents.
Best time of year: Autumn and Spring.
Parking & Accessibility: Easy on-site parking right beside the orchard with toilets available. One of the easiest locations to access, making it ideal for grandparents, young families and extended family sessions.
What to wear: Soft creams, sage, dusty pinks and warm neutrals pair beautifully with both the spring blossoms and autumn colours.
My tip: This is such a special location for family photography in Perth because it’s a private orchard that I have access to. We can drive right up to where we’re shooting, there’s no crowds and during blossom season or persimmon season it’s absolutely stunning. It’s one of those places that always feels a little bit magical. Roleystone Orchards is also one of my favourite locations for maternity photography in Perth.
Bishop Road Reserve
Best for: Families with young children, older children, extended families, maternity sessions, dogs and grandparents.
Best time of year: All seasons.
Parking & Accessibility: Easy parking close to the location with only a short walk required. The paths are relatively flat, making it suitable for prams, grandparents and larger family groups, although there are no public toilets.
What to wear: Natural neutral colours with soft textures work beautifully against the river, gum trees and open grassy spaces.
My tip: I love this little spot for family photography in Perth because it’s such a central location but still feels quiet and secluded. You’ve got the river, a little bush section and plenty of room for larger families and dogs without lots of people walking through your photos.
Bay View Park (Mosman Park)
Best for: Families with young children, older children, maternity sessions, dogs and grandparents.
Best time of year: All seasons.
Parking & Accessibility: Parking is available close to the location, however there are quite a few stairs leading down to the jetty and beach. This location is best suited to families who are comfortable walking stairs and is not ideal for prams, wheelchairs or grandparents with limited mobility. There are no public toilets.
What to wear: Cream, sand, soft blue and muted green create a timeless look that complements the river, jetty and limestone shoreline.
My tip: This little hidden gem is one of my favourite spots for family photography in Perth if you’re looking for something a little different. There’s a gorgeous little jetty, a hidden beach, cute wooden stairs and beautiful limestone rocks. It’s perfect for a maternity session or even a family who loves fishing. Bay View Park is also one of my favourite locations for maternity photography in Perth
Perry’s Paddock
Best for: Families with young children, older children, extended families, maternity sessions, dogs and grandparents.
Best time of year: All seasons.
Parking & Accessibility: Easy parking is available with flat open walking tracks throughout the reserve. Suitable for prams, grandparents and dogs, although there are no public toilets on site.
What to wear: Soft earthy tones such as cream, oatmeal, sage and dusty blue in natural fabrics like linen and cotton complement the open grasslands beautifully and keep the focus on your family.
My tip: Perry’s Paddock is a beautiful location for family photography in Perth if you love big open fields, golden grass, trees and gorgeous light. I always recommend a sunrise or weekday session because you get the place almost to yourself and the golden light is absolutely beautiful.

Kings Park, Perry’s Paddock, Jarrahdale Forest and Coogee Beach are some of my favourites for younger children. They all have plenty of space for little ones to explore, which means they’re far more likely to relax and simply enjoy themselves instead of feeling like they’re at a photoshoot.
Can we include our dog in our family photo session?
